Jean Valjean

• Vocal Range: Tenor with strong low notes and strong falsetto. Very vocally demanding. Low A to High A 

• Character Description: The central character in the story, Jean Valjean is a former convict who served 19 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread. He is a man of great strength, both physically and morally, who struggles to break free from his past and become an honorable man.

Javert

• Vocal Range: Baritone with power. Low F to High F#

• Character Description: The relentless police inspector who makes it his life's mission to bring Valjean to justice. Javert is a man of rigid morals and duty, believing in the absolute law, and he cannot accept the possibility of redemption for Valjean.

Fantine

• Vocal Range: Mezzo-Soprano with Belt. G flat to Eb

• Character Description: A young woman abandoned by her lover, Fantine is left to care for her daughter, Cosette. She falls into poverty and ill health, eventually turning to prostitution to provide for her child. Her tragic life and death set the stage for Valjean's transformation.

Cosette

• Vocal Range: Light Lyric Soprano. B flat to High C

• Character Description: Fantine’s daughter, who is adopted by Valjean. Cosette grows up to be a beautiful and kind young woman. She falls in love with Marius, representing innocence and hope in the story.

Marius Pontmercy

• Vocal Range: Baritone/Tenor with pop flare/classical style. Low A to High A flat

• Character Description: A passionate and idealistic young student who becomes involved in the revolutionary movement. Marius falls in love with Cosette and struggles with his loyalty to his friends and his love for her.

Éponine

• Vocal Range: Low Alto with strong Belt. F sharp to E

• Character Description: The daughter of the Thénardiers, Éponine is a tough, streetwise young woman who secretly loves Marius. Though she is from a criminal family, she has a heart of gold, and her unrequited love for Marius leads her to perform acts of selflessness.

Thenardier

• Vocal Range: Comedic Baritone. G flat to G

• Character Description: A cunning, dishonest innkeeper who takes in Cosette as a child, treating her cruelly while spoiling his own daughter. He is a master of trickery and greed, always looking for a way to profit from others’ misfortune.

Madame Thénardier

• Vocal Range: Mezzo-Soprano. G flat to D

• Character Description: Thenardier's wife, she is equally as devious and selfish as her husband. She mistreats Cosette when she is in her care and is completely unscrupulous in her dealings with others.

Enjolras

• Vocal Range: Tenor with Belt. A to High G

• Character Description: The charismatic and passionate leader of the student revolutionaries. Enjolras is committed to the cause of freedom and justice and serves as a symbol of revolutionary zeal throughout the story.

Gavroche

• Vocal Range: Boy Soprano. B to G

• Character Description: Gavroche is a brave and cheeky street urchin who embodies the spirit of rebellion. Though young, he is fiercely loyal to the revolutionaries and plays a vital role at the barricade. His death is one of the most heartbreaking moments in the show, showcasing the tragedy of the revolution’s failure.

Young Cosette

• Vocal Range: Child Soprano. A to C

• Character Description: Fantine’s daughter, Cosette is left in the care of the cruel Thénardiers. Young Cosette is forced to work as a servant in their inn and is treated horribly until Valjean rescues her. She sings the haunting solo “Castle on a Cloud,” which reflects her dreams of a better life.

Young Eponine

• Character Description: The spoiled daughter of the Thénardiers who grows up to be the tough but caring Éponine. Young Éponine appears in scenes with Young Cosette, where she is favored by her parents while Cosette is mistreated. Though she doesn’t have any lines, Young Éponine helps establish the dynamic between the two girls and the Thénardier family.

ENSEMBLE

• Ensemble members will portray a variety of roles, including factory workers, townspeople, beggars, wedding guests, and revolutionaries. Strong singing ability is required as the ensemble will be featured in many key musical numbers. Ability to perform multiple roles and adapt to different characters is essential. All vocal ranges are welcome.
