Synopsis

IN THE HEIGHTS tells the universal story of a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood – a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It’s a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind. IN THE HEIGHTS is the winner of the 2008 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Score, Best Choreography and Best Orchestrations.

SEEKING

Actors of all ages, race, and body type are encouraged to audition. Due to the nature of the show, some roles are specific to certain ethnicities and to respect the nature of the play, we will cast as such. Performers with strengths in Hip-Hop, Latin and Break Dances as well as rap or spoken word are especially encouraged to audition.

We are looking for both singers and dancers for this production. Whether you consider yourself a dancer who can carry a tune or a singer who can move, we want to see you

All Roles Open.

USNAVI DE LA VEGA (Latino, Reads 20s-30s): 24 year old owner of De La Vega's Bodega, his parents emigrated from the Dominican Republic and have since passed away. He lives with Abuela Claudia (Grandmother Claudia), who isn't actually his grandmother but they are as close as family. Usnavi is in love with Vanessa and remains the eyes and ears of his Washington Heights neighborhood. Strong actor must be an excellent rapper and a good mover. Singing a plus.

NINA ROSARIO (Strong Belt/Mix to F5, Latina, Reads as college age) 19 year old Nina has just finished her freshman year at Stanford University. She is the daughter of Kevin and Camilia Rosario. Nina is the only member of her family and friends who made it to college. She is best friends with Vanessa and a beacon of hope and inspiration to all who know her; she represents the opportunity outside of "the heights." Good mover.

KEVIN ROSARIO (Latino, Reads 40s-50s)In his forties and owner of Rosario Car and Limousine, Kevin is a husband to Camilia and father to Nina. While Kevin was born and raised in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, he immigrated to New York City with Camilia. Kevin immediately started working to provide a better life for his newly- arrived family. He is stubborn, hot tempered at times and can be quick to act without thoughts of repercussions. Singing actor who moves well.

CAMILIA ROSARIO (Latina, Reads 40s-50s) Also in her forties, she is the co-owner of Rosario Car and Limousine with her husband Kevin. Also from Arecibo, Puerto Rico, she fell in love with Kevin at 19 and immigrated with him to New York City. She is cool-headed yet keeps a subtle but strong leash on Kevin. Her daughter Nina has just returned for the summer from her first year at Stanford. Singing actor who moves well.

BENNY (Black/ African-American, Ethnically Ambiguous, Reads 20s-30s) Now a 24 year old cab driver for Rosario Car and Limousine, he once was a street punk and hoodlum, often finding himself in trouble. Kevin saw promise in Benny and helped shape him into a responsible, hard-working young man. Benny has enormous respect for Kevin and sees him as a father figure. Eventually falling in love with Nina, Benny sees a future for them by becoming a businessman. He and Usnavi are best friends. Strong singer and excellent mover.

VANESSA (Strong Belt, Latina, Reads Late Teens to 20s) A 19 year old shampoo girl and Daniela's Salon, Vanessa is strong, intelligent and grew up with Benny and Usnavi. Though Usnavi would like to be something more than Vanessa's "friend", he has never made any attempt. Vanessa dreams of leaving to create her own life away from her alcoholic mother. Very sexy. Strong belt to F.. Must be a strong dancer.

SONNY  (Latino, Reads in teens) 15 years old and Usnavi's cousin, Sonny is spending the summer working for Usnavi at the bodega. He usually hangs out on the street with his friend Graffiti Pete but avoids trouble. He is an extremely intelligent young man who strives to emulate Usnavi. Passionate to solve the social and economic problems of the city, he is someone that needs guidance or risks ending up a street punk. Must be a good rapper and a strong mover.

ABUELA CLAUDIA (Alto with Belt, Latina, Reads as late 60s+) In her late 60's, she raised Usnavi after his parents passed away and continues to live with him. She emigrated from Cuba when she was very young. Of all the characters, Abuela Claudia has been in "the Heights" the longest. She struggled to learn English, struggled to find work and in turn has helped others who have followed in her path. She is clearly the matriarch of the neighborhood. Strong belt to a C.

DANIELA (Alto, Latina, Reads 30s-40s) In her thirties or early forties, she is the owner of Daniela's Salon. Savvy to say the least, she is quick witted, brassy and outspoken. While she retains a motherly relationship with Vanessa, she remains the gossip queen of the neighborhood. Non-nonsense, she has built a successful business but is being forced out of the neighborhood because of rent hikes. Comic actress with a strong belt. Should be an excellent mover.

CARLA (Latina, Reads 20s-30s) In her mid-twenties to early thirties, she is a hairdresser at Daniela's Salon. Born and raised in Queens, she is a pure, sweet, innocent, and loving woman who is devoted to her family and friends though she is easily taken advantage of because of her naivety. She and Daniela are best friends. Strong belt mix. Should be an excellent mover.

GRAFFITI PETE (Reads late teens to 20s, any race, must be dancer) An 18-year old graffiti artist and the nemesis of Usnavi, he is always hanging out on the streets, dancing to his boombox music, spraying any surface he can. Usnavi is unhappy that Sonny and Graffiti Pete are friends because Graffiti Pete epitomizes everything that Usnavi hopes that Sonny will not grow up to be. Must be an extremely strong dancer.

PIRAGUA GUY (Latino, Reads 30s-40s) In his-mid thirties, he walks the hot and humid streets of Washington Heights selling piraguas (flavored ice shavings) to earn a living. He represents the rhythm of the islands in the big city. Bright, soaring tenor.

ENSEMBLE: 5 Women, 6 Men

Synopsis

It’s the tail end of the big, bad 1980s in Hollywood, and the party has been raging hard. Aqua Net, Lycra, lace and liquor flow freely at one of the Sunset Strip’s last legendary venues, a place where sex machine Stacee Jaxx takes the stage and scantily clad groupies line up to turn their fantasies into reality. Amidst the madness, aspiring rock star (and resident toilet cleaner) Drew longs to take the stage as the next big thing (and longs for small-town girl Sherri, fresh off the bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes). But the rock ’n’ roll fairy tale is about to end when German developers sweep into town with plans to turn the fabled Strip into just another capitalist strip mall. Can Drew, Sherri and the gang save the strip – and themselves – before it’s too late? Only the music of hit bands Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and more hold the answer.

All Roles Open.

DREW BOLEY: (Reads early 20s) A strong rock singer that can mix belt up to at least a high C, preferably high D, with comedic timing and charm. He’s a rocker who dreams of making it big on the Sunset Strip and beyond. A devoted good guy who’s currently working as a bar back at the famous Bourbon Bar as he strives to “break in" writing and singing his own music. He has instant attraction and chemistry with Sherrie.

SHERRIE CHRISTIAN: (Reads as early 20s) A strong rock belter up to F5 with strong low notes, great comedic timing and good movement ability. She is straight off the bus from Kansas and new to the Sunset Strip to pursue her passion and dreams of becoming an actress. Unsuspecting and trusting in others even as she finds herself taking a stripper job to get by.

LONNY: (Reads early 30s) A dynamic comic with improv skills and strong rock vocals that can belt up to a high B. The sound guy at the Bourbon Bar and self-proclaimed “sound god”, he’s the narrator/conjurer of the show who has instant stage presence and charisma to spare. Funny, unabashed, and cheeky.

DENNIS DUPREE: (Reads 30s-40s) A rock baritone that can rock belt up to a G with excellent comedic timing. He runs the Bourbon Room and is an easy-going stoner type whose heart is in the right place but is feeling the changing of the times arriving as everyone looks to him to help save the bourbon bar, and the Strip, from being sold off to foreign developers. A dry wit.

STACEE JAXX/FATHER: (Reads late 20s t0 30s) A Rock Tenor that can whale up to a high C - rock star that decided to leave his successful hair/metal -rock band to try it solo. Has Charm when he wants to but then immediately drops it. Full of himself and truly the ultimate bad boy. Also plays Sherrie's Father.

JUSTICE CHARLIER/ MOTHER: (Reads Late 20s-30s) Sings rock and soul with a belt up to a E5 with strong low notes. Once a performer herself, she now operates a strip club where she is a maternal figure for the girls that work for her. Her presence is strong with an easy sensuality.

HERTZ KLINEMANN: (Reads 40s-50s) A rock Baritone that belts up to at least a G# preferably an A. He’s a German businessman trying to buy the Bourbon Bar and most of the Strip to develop it. He is intimidating and uptight. Very demanding of his son.

FRANZ KLINEMANN: (Reads early 20s) Hertz’s son with a rock belt up to A. He is pressured and intimidated by his father to work for him. He’d much rather be back home starting his own confectionery store. Shy, gentle with a big heart. Has dance ability.

REGINA: (Reads late 20s) A conscientious, earthy, hippie type who leads the protest against Hertz’s attempted take-over of the Strip. Who has strong comedic timing. Rock Belt up to a C#. Has dance ability.
