show synopsis

Pippin is the story of a young prince searching for purpose, fulfillment, and the meaning of life. Guided by the mysterious Leading Player and a troupe of performers, Pippin embarks on a journey through war, love, power, and adventure, believing each will bring him happiness. As he discovers that perfection is an illusion, Pippin must decide whether to chase an extraordinary destiny or embrace the beauty of an ordinary life. Filled with unforgettable music, dazzling theatricality, and timeless themes, Pippin is a captivating coming-of-age musical about finding where you truly belong.

Character breakdown

Pippin​​

• Vocal Range: G2–Ab4

• Description: The young prince searching for purpose and fulfillment. Intelligent, idealistic, vulnerable, and sincere. He must carry the emotional arc of the show and have strong acting ability. 

Leading Player​

• Vocal Range: Db3–Ab4

• Description: The charismatic ringmaster who guides—and manipulates—Pippin's journey. Commands the stage with confidence, exceptional dance ability, and magnetic charisma. This is one of musical theatre's most demanding leading roles.

Charles (Charlemagne)​

• Vocal Range: G2–E4

• Description: Pippin's father and Emperor. Powerful, commanding, and larger than life, with both humor and authority. 

​

Fastrada​

• Vocal Range: A3–F5

• Description: Pippin's ambitious stepmother. Seductive, cunning, witty, and determined to secure the throne for her son. A strong comedic actress with excellent vocal skills. 

​

Lewis​

• Vocal Requirement: Primarily spoken role

• Description: Charlemagne and Fastrada's son. Athletic, self-absorbed, not especially bright, and full of bravado. Requires strong physical comedy. 

​

Berthe​

• Vocal Range: E3–C5

• Description: Pippin's grandmother. Spirited, wise, flirtatious, and full of life. Delivers one of the show's signature songs, "No Time at All." 

​

Catherine​

• Vocal Range: F♯3–D♭5

• Description: A widow and mother who offers Pippin genuine love and stability. Warm, grounded, compassionate, and emotionally authentic. 

​

Theo​

• Description: Catherine's young son. Innocent, imaginative, and lovable. Depending on the production, he may sing at the end of the show. 

​

Ensemble ("The Players")

The ensemble is one of the most important elements of Pippin. They portray:
